Summary
Nightfall, also known as a nocturnal emission or wet dream or sex dream, is an involuntary or spontaneous orgasm, which occurs during sleep and leads to the discharge of semen in males or vaginal secretion in females. It is most common in adolescents, and sexually active adults, especially when they have erotic dreams. The ejaculated fluid in men is called semen and it appears as a slightly thick, sticky discharge on the undergarments when one wakes up suddenly or early in the morning. It is sometimes embarrassing to find out and discuss this with anyone, especially parents. Causes of nightfall are hormonal changes and increased sexual urges. Diagnosis is made mainly by history and clinical examination. Prevention involves changes in thought process and certain lifestyle habits. Counselling is the choice of treatment, though herbal remedies may help control the symptoms.
